Bethelehem Light of Peace and Friendship in Russia
Bethlehem Light of Peace and Friendship , 2006-2007 comes to Russia
Bethlehem Light of Peace and Friendship is a long running international action of European Scouts, started about twenty years ago in Austria initiated by ORF National television channel.
The Light is taken on by priests of every Christian confession in the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem and spread all over Europe in special oil lamps. The action runs as a relay– Bethlehem Light is passed from hand to hand, from Catholic to Protestant to Orthodox, from Scout headquarters to parishes. In recent years the Light has crossed the oceans and comes also to USA and South Africa.
Bethlehem Light comes to Russia for the ninth year. Traditionally the Light is passed to Russian and Byelorussian Scouts from their Polish brothers – harcers.
This year Bethlehem Light will come to Russia before the 25 th of December to illuminate Catholic and Protestant parishes at Christmas (as celebrated on the Gregorian calender).
In Moscow the Light arrives at the Krutitsky monastery – Êðóòèöêîå ïîäâîðüå where a service is celebrated. Then the Light is passed to many S couts to be brought into various regions of Russia: Vladimir, Kazan, Kostroma, Kursk, Nizhniy Novgorod, Obninsk, Petrozavodsk, Saint Petersburg, Saransk, Yaroslavl, and others.
The Fund “Russian Scout” organises and supports Bethlehem Light in 2006-2007. The action is also endorsed by Youth Department of the Moscow Patriarchate of Russian Orthodox Church.
The service celebrating the arrival of Bethlehem Light to Moscow will be held in the Krutitsky Monastery at 11 p. m. on 21st of December at Krutitskaya 11, near from metro station “Proletarskaya”.
